I walked to the farmer's market this Saturday morning instead of driving, which was about an hour round-trip. (And cold!) It was definitely a nice, relaxed bit of exercise that works well for an enjoyable weekend activity and according to my bodybugg burned a good number of calories!

Reviewing my bodybugg, the stationary bike isn't giving me a great workout, so today I did a rando exercise DVD for 20 min, then some stretching and strength exercises for about another 10. Experimenting ahoy....

I should have put "positive changes" in quotes; I was using the phrase because tcmahunt had used it. A fair system would just reward positive behaviors.
The contrast between not smoking and the rest of the criteria is really the basic point. Not smoking is a good behavior--the rest of the criteria are like rewarding you for not getting lung cancer. And all the online assistance programs in the world won't help you with that if cancer (or high cholesterol, or high blood pressure) run in your family.

Right, ok, then I guess I won't criticize anything that doesn't directly affect me.....like meggiep said, good luck on the highway system on that island.
You know what would incentivize making positive changes to become healthier? Incentivizing the positive changes, and not the end results that may or may not be an accurate reflection of those changes.

But BMI isn't "combined with all the other measures" -- whatever your lowest score is prompts the discount. So no matter if your blood pressure and cholesterol are great, no matter if you work out 5 times a week and eat a healthy diet -- if your BMI is too high, you get less of a discount than skinnier coworkers.
It makes me wish I ever shopped at Whole Foods, so that I could now stop.

Gah, I have approximately eleven million problems with the class. One of the main reasons this causes me mondo annoyance is that obesity is not a problem because fat people are stupid. It is a more complicated and intractable problem for all sorts of reasons, but not because overweight people don't know that vegetables are healthy and nachos are not, and the idea that all overweight people need is a nutrition class merely underscores a major stereotype about overweight people.

Fair point that we only have 10 out of 20 to do, but some of the challenges are premised on specific abilities/capacities. I don't belong to a gym and have neither the money nor the ability to take a hot yoga class, and wouldn't be comfortable taking a pole dancing class even if I could afford it and could find one outside of a gym. I'm not in New York at New Year's Eve, so "Last Run" is out. So there's 3 of 20 crossed off even before we get to the question of whether I'm willing to walk into my formal office every morning sweaty and out of breath. lol.
There's enough variety in this challenge that it isn't the end of the world, but I just want to push back a little bit because I looked back at the summer challenge before Eat.Sweat.Blog, which is when I first joined this site, and I am straight-up physically incapable of most of the feats on that list! I really liked having Eat.Sweat.Blog as an extra motivation through October, and I like the Emergency Holiday Challenge as a collection of challenging-yet-doable feats, but I just want to flag that there are people doing this challenge who aren't New Yorkers who belong to gyms and love yoga. Consider me a voice from the low end of the bell curve. That's right....Sardonic: lowering the median since 2009. Represent.

That said, I think the naughty flogging, blood leveling, and tox-detox should be for the whole month. I don't know about y'all, but I need that blood leveling on the weekends, not weekdays. (I guess I could see more of a weekday argument for tox-detox, but seeing as I have no plans to ever take a yoga class, let alone a hot one, I'm not the best equipped to judge how feasible that is.)

I find the stairs one totally impractical...surely the point of the feats is that they are pushing us to do things we normally wouldn't, yet are capable of doing with a little effort? I just think that one is an automatic write-off for a lot of people in NYC (and probably other urban areas), including myself--much as I heart the challenge I'm not chugging up twenty flights of stairs in work clothes to arrive sweaty and out of breath every morning! And ditto on the standing on public transportation. I usually do this in the mornings just because the train is crowded, but if I have a 45 minute ride ahead of me at the end of the day, you best believe I'm sitting down. I might do it once or a few times for the sake of achieving a feat, but for over a month? Heck no.

I tried a Siggi Skyr from Fairway a couple of months ago (grapefruit) and haaaaaaaated it. I am a devotee of greek yogurt, though. I'm still trying to figure out the most economical option--I've been obsessed with Trader Joe's single-serving pomegranate and honey tubs, but TJ is harder to get to where I live now, so I tried buying a big tub of Fage and portioning it into tupperware, but that oddly didn't really save money. Anybody got any tips on another brand to try?

Boxing Day: Be Queen or King of the Obvious and do some sort of boxing workout on, wait for it, Boxing Day. (December 26th, for those you not in the know, eh.) Punch a bag, pop in a kickboxing DVD, or fight your little sister over the last bit of Christmas dinner leftovers.
Wassail Worldwide: There are a lot of people spending the holidays far away from their families during the holidays. Send some holiday cheer their way by sending a card and some treats to someone you know who is stationed abroad, donating to an organization that sends gift packages to soldiers overseas, or even selecting gifts to be sent to a random soldier yourself through a website like Treats for Troops. I second the suggestion to offer alternatives to gym-based workouts!
A couple more ideas:
Winter solstice holidays celebrate the beginning of the sun's return after shorter and shorter days. (Think Persephone in Hades.) Get up one morning before the sun is up and honor the returning daylight with some Sun Salutations at sunrise.
The Yule Log: If you are lucky enough to have a fireplace, do a few laps around the house lifting some logs to start a cozy holiday fire. For those of us not lucky enough to have our own hearth, take a jog or walk as close to a wooded area as you can get.

Sigh. I posted this on the earlier preliminary tally, but I will repeat: I apparently failed to check the "Eat.Sweat.Blog" tag on a single workout. You can see I have 20 within the challenge time though, because my page lists 20 workouts and I joined for the challenge. (And I completed 10 feats.)
I don't mean to whine aboot it (well, yes I do), and I don't want a prize, but I want my name on the dang list because I had my gallbladder removed in October and still managed the freaking 20 workouts! Boooooooo. /pityparty

A 10-day challenge: eat either red and green foods (in the spirit of both Christmas and Kwanzaa) or blue and white foods (in the spirit of Chanukah) in the same meal 10 times throughout the challenge. Liberal interpretations of "blue" accepted to avoid artificial colors.

Nitpicky, but I REALLY wanted those 20--I had surgery this month and had to fit 20 workouts in around that, dammit! hehehe. So I swear to jeebus I have 20 workouts (I do have 20 posts on my page), but only 19 currently show up in the Eat.Sweat.Blog tally.
