Workout
Family time
My mom used to run. Like, for real. She ran a half-marathon when I was four, and all I remember about it was how hard she worked, how exhausted she was at the end, and how impossible a feat it seemed to be. I grew up and never even considered running, or any other athletic endeavor, but in the back of my mind I always had that image of her, tired and triumphant at the finish.
Workout
Procrastination city
With the spring, procrastinating has hit hard over in all corners of Reganh-ville. Things got so bad that for one deadline I set for myself I had to request that my mother nag me if I didn't meet it. (it's coming up Friday. I'm not even close to done.
Workout
Too sexy for PT
After much debate and internal dialogue, I've decided a)that my prescribed physical therapy regimen counts as valid exercise minutes (if I'm sweating, it counts!) and b)the most accurate way to categorize these minutes is under miscellaneous.
Workout
Run, then walk. (Then eat.)
What's the best way to follow up an 11-mile run? a 2-hour walk, of course!
Workout
Coming back around
I've only been running in the mornings again for about 2 weeks now - by the time the sun started rising early enough I was under a strict no-running regimen (stupid, completely self-incurred ITB injury) and then rehabbing etc etc.
Workout
last-ditch yoga
Felt slightly better enough to get to work today, but that just about sapped what little strength I'd built up over the last three days. So more non-intensive yoga, mostly just to stretch and remind my body what it feels like to move. Some day I'll get back to the gym, right? I don't think I can take much more of this!
Workout
Zombie shopping
To the library, where I loaded myself down with 6 books and 3 dvds (hey, there was a Snowpocalypse (TM) a-coming!) and then the grocery store where I added multiple cans of soup, juice, and ice cream to the load.
Workout
I have no legs
My knees have always been trouble for me - I have a long and robust history of arthritis in my family, and a healthy paranoid fear of stress injury, so when I run I'm hyper-aware of them. My right knees been vaguely sore for the past couple of weeks, so I've decided to take preventive measures rather than run the risk of having it develop into a real problem.
Workout
Ballet & errands
I wouldn't normally consider running errands part of a real workout, but when tacked at the end of an intense ballet class, it sure felt like one. I say it every week, but I really need to incorporate more dance into my routine. It's so different from running, and so good for me - never mind that it's good to really focus on what I'm doing with my body for a solid hour.

Yes! So hard to remember, but so stupidly true. You never regret getting off your butt...but you almost always regret staying on it.

They've been leaving the gate open a lot recently, though you have to be careful there are no security guards around when you sneak through. I got busted once - booping siren and everything! - and it was pretty embarrassing. Totally worth it, though, if you get in. You should give it another try!

There is definitely a standard direction on tracks and this guy ain't it! I do get the desire to reverse directions sometimes - when I used to do long runs on the track and got really desperate I was known to go against the flow occasionally, but only around the very outermost edge to minimize interference (and I still felt like a jerk when I did it.) If he's doing it every time he clearly has no such qualms - either he doesn't know there's a convention he's breaking, or he's happy being a jerk.
Unfortunately my only strategy for dealing with etiquette breaches is to give the perpetrator the stink eye. Not terrifically effective, I'll own - but it makes me feel better!

SQUEEEEEEEE!
I'm going to Disneyland! Oh, wait...I'm going to get properly fitted by a real expert for the perfect new shoes in which to run my upcoming half-marathon! EVEN BETTER.
I couldn't have designed a better prize if I'd tried. This is amazing. THANK YOU SW!
This challenge really got through to me in a way the last two didn't - I feel fantastic about where I am and what I'm doing with myself this year and I know it's because of the encouragement and motivation of this crazy site. I'm almost tempted to say that's the real prize...but screw it. We all know NEW SHOES (+ clothes!) is where it's at!

You just blew my mind.
I've always suspected that somewhere, deep down inside, I was a closet Valentine's Day lover. But I buried it under many layers of cynicism and ennui and having a long-term boyfriend whose BIRTHDAY was feb 14. (Not fair!) No longer - I'm getting out the pink glitter and damn the torpedoes! I love Valentine's Day, and I love this post!

Holy mother. That is possibly the greatest feat of self-control I've ever heard! I'm on day 3 sugar-free and you've totally given my motivation the kick in the butt it needed.

Really, if you're already drinking Bud (/Coors/Miller), does the extra "light" make any difference?? It's just a slightly paler shade of pee...
Which is to say that during a sporting event it's only appropriate to drink pee-beer. But Diet pee-beer? That's a step too far.

I feel like I just got back from a great run just from reading this!
PS> I usually do well with 2 pairs of regular socks - a tighter, performance-type pair under some thicker athletic guys. Not perfect, but pretty much counters that whole mesh-top shoe problem!

Oh man, those look ridiculous! I'm drowning in beets and have been wanting to try brownies - but I hate them cakey. I'm definitely going to try this out. Thanks for sharing!

No, no apologies needed! I really didn't mean to sound so adamant about it - it's just something that's been kicking around my thoughts recently but I hadn't had a chance to get out on paper. (screen? whatever.) I really do think there are a lot of people who can do it healthily and feel the benefits - it's just important to remember that there are just as many people who can't, and that's okay too. Everybody's got their something, right?

If you're eating properly, you shouldn't need to give your system a "break." Controlling intake in ways that aren't a simple response to your body's needs (you're hungry, eat. you're not hungry, don't.) falls somewhere on the slippery slope of disordered eating. See this fascinating NYT article - eating disorders aren't always as obvious as you'd think.
This is coming across more stridently than I actually believe - if it's done on occasion, for a reason, by someone who has healthy eating habits, I don't think there's anything much wrong with it. It's such a personal issue that advocating it for anyone else, especially people who might be prone to other food control issues, gives me the willies.

Have you noticed any effect on your running? This is the biggest mind-blower for me, since all traditional wisdom claims muscular endurance comes from grain- and sugar- based carbs. I know fruit and veg are carbs, but I do think see a difference when I run after some kind of simple starchy snack (bread etc) than after an apple.

I'm usually able to sleep through anything, so this anxiety thing really freaked me out (ha.)
The CSA changed my life! This was my first year after a couple of years of trying to get it...it's been fantastic. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Beautifully written. I know exactly how you feel! Running used to give me such intense pain in my neck and shoulders that I thought I was having a heart attack at age 14.
Just keep focusing on that feeling of freedom, and the speed/ability will naturally follow. And when you run that race, there really will be cheering!

It's sad, but I'm just thankful the article's just about her clothing, and not mannish shoulders or unsightly bulging thighs or any of that ridiculousness. The number of times I've read people giving the Williamses crap for not trying to hide their (powerful! freaking amazing!) shoulders off the courts boggles the mind.
They're athletes. We love them precisely for what their bodies can do. Don't try to turn around and also convince me they're somehow no good.
