Love challenge: Essential, albeit a bit devastating, reading
Love challengers. In the air right now are two wonderful things I've read about love. I'm just so blown away by these stories.

Love challenge: A poem
Running in the cold is a good foil for yoga. It's vigorous, well, for me anyway. I have a bad habit of going out underdressed and that forces me to keep the pace brisk so as not to freeze and fall into a snowbank because it's so cozy and I'm so tired and I'm just going to sleep for a few minutes. And then. Bammo! I'm dead.

Love challenge: Love songs upon love songs
Tuesday. No more long weekend. So much work. So much interest in New York Fashion Week. So much distraction!
But I squeezed in a workout by going to a midday yoga class. I didn't really get my sweat on. And while I find Yoga challenging and all and like it a bunch and think it makes me more calm. But lately I sort of just want to lift heavy stuff and push my body to exhaustion.
Love challenge: A weekend away. Feat completed.
I am so far behind in my challenge posts that they are starting to feel like work. But the challenge itself continues.
So here is the first update.

Love day 1: Snowy Run
NYC's definition of a "blizzard" is such that I can wear heels two days after it passes and can go for a run just one day hence. And so I ran from my house to the reservoir and back.
You Wrote We Like
From Beijing with Love, NYC redux!
So, I didn’t do the New Year’s challenge, possibly tanking my chances of winning this big Self Love thing and getting my kayak on in Puerto Rico. Does this mean I’m gonna slack on the Love Challenge? Yes! Er, I mean, No! Hell no. It’s only 10 damn days. And I’m calling the shots. So here goes.

Happy. Posting. 1am? (oh yeah. and some yoga.)
A while ago I left Brooklyn, moved to Manhattan, and was convinced I wouldn't make many new friends. I already have them (mostly in Brooklyn) and just figured that was enough. It's easy to get out to Prospect Heights and Bed Stuy and wherever else.
Go Single Ladies Go!
And I don't mean go run out and put a ring on some dolt's sausage-y, oversized finger.

John Mayer's Balls
Yeah, it's a catchy title. From this great end-of-year fitness story posted on the Awl that also discusses squats, exercise and Ol' Dirty Bastard. Spesh. Yes.

The brand new super luxe Pure Yoga UWS!
Soooooo, in November Pure Yoga offered a pretty decent month to month membership deal with no joining fee. I believe that the joining fee is usually something outrageous and that the month-to-month would normally leave you confused, much like after an armed robbery.
But for $150/month that's just under $13 a class if you go 3 times a week, which ain't bad given that a single class at most places is $15-$20 and that a class with no membership at Pure is an outrageous $30. Sadly, I live on 74th and the park, nowhere near such cheap and cool yoga places like Yoga to the People, etc.
So I thought, what the fuck. If a few months go by and I don't do my dozen classes a month, I quit. And if I do, I get a bargain. And if I go much much more often, I should get a life.
I think that in the near future I'll go often....

Shopping can be a workout
When it involves about 2 miles of walking, a marathon sprint through several Upper West Side boutiques, and the patience of Job as your friend decides that nothing will ever look quite right because she has a bit of the PMS.

Broken Embraces
Friday night at the last minute I decided to see Broken Embraces. Like the most recent Penelope Cruz/Pedro Almodovar movies, it captured a perfect blend of beauty, nostalgia, sadness, and a quiet patience. It made peace with the fact that life dishes up more bad and bland than good, but that the good is SO good, SO amazing, SO bright, that it somehow makes sense.

Holiday healing and minimal working out
Monday: walked 3 miles. It felt good. Since the cold weather has just begun, I like it right now. I also like it because I broke down and now own a down coat, the kind that make everyone look like the Michilen Man. And what I sacrificed in vanity, I have made up for in warmth. I'm so warm. So 'tevs on the aesthetics.

Fela was AMAZING. It is the best thing to happen to Broadway in soooo long. Seriously awesome story presented for us by a genius (Bill T. Jones) with music and moves that inspire overwhelming joy in the face of so much sadness. I am so glad you guys went!!! Props to Cadoogan for a kickin gift.

Also, the best personal trainer I've ever had was my swim teacher in Beijing. He was really old (like geriatric), but very enthusiastic. He taught me to swim and made me do all sorts of arm and back exercises and stratches. And he made me like exercise. But no one would ever look at him and think anything other than old-Metamucil-eater. So bullocks on whatever anyone thinks of what an instructor looks like.

I can't believe that you're going to become a personal trainer! Actually, I can't believe you aren't already... Social Workout has produced a poster child? You will a great motivator because you so clearly love working out yourself.

Holy God. Schuyler Grant played Diana Barry on Anne of Green Gables! Why the hell am I only figuring this out now? Yoga! Of course. What else do you do after Gilbert Blythe lives happily ever after with your bosom friend? You become a yogi and chant it all away. Go Diana!

Your space is beautiful. Every home needs a place of focus and meaning. For some it is photos of family on the mantle, for others spiritual objects. (I suspect that for most guys I know, it is a widescreen TV...) Thanks for the picture! It's an inspiration.
