farm run
arrived on my family's farm late in the day, just in time for a run before sunset. It's warm down here in the south, and the sandy soil feels great under my feet. Hopped a few electric fences (always freaks me out), stared down some cows. A lovely return after too many days off.
Workout
drop-in yoga
early(ish) morning, going from freezing Union Square up to the warmth and lovely atmosphere of OM - lovely gift to myself. I dug this class, just enough challenge and a few new tricks to make it worth the trek from my aunt's apartment uptown on day 2 of my short NY visit.
Place:
Om Yoga
Workout
frozen toes run
I know my vibram 5 fingers are rated for 20 degrees F - and they were pretty damn cold in the mid-20s, damp and occasionally slushy Central Park Loop. But I couldn't resist a go around the loop on my one morning in NY. I was glad to find I am more in shape than this spring when I last ran the loop regularly. Only the last hill felt painful. I remember swearing my way up
Place:
Central Park
Workout
snowy walk
worked up a sweat trudging through knee-deep snow for a half hour or so.. prettiest workout of the year.
Workout
all I want for christmas is a forearm stand
and I'm getting closer and closer...
Place:
Dhyana Yoga
Workout
back handspring, handspring, handspring! (with help)
last day of my gymnastics class for a few months since I am working out of time for the winter/spring. A great little motley crew.. this night, a fellow student and I did several handsprings with help -- a glimpse of what may come in 2010?!
Workout
winter run... again
went running on the loop at the museum where I work. Ran into director who teased/berated me for running instead of going to staff xmas party. Sorry bro...
Workout
icicle run
ran mid-morning in my local state park, where the ground was pretty hard, but the sun was melting icicles out of the sky. I almost tripped on a bar of ice lying int he road. Way cool. Frosty and crystalline all around the edges of the river, or maybe that was just the runner's high talking. I wear so-called "barefoot" running shoes (vibram 5 fingers) and running on rocky
Workout
sweaty yoga
and not the hot kind (though it warms up w/ all the body heat in there). I have been going to Simon Park's class for a few months now, and feeling the many arm balances creep up on me -- in a good way: I am holding handstands and forearm stands way more consistently. We did a whole lotta scorpion this week, and I rocked a scorpion handstand (using the wall to get there, of course..

Dhyana Yoga
Workout
Gymnastics
I have been tumbling at the tiny studio in south(ish) Philly for a few months now.. a great workout and sweet people. I am feeling super strong lately, and probably did 40 front walkovers, still trying to get the end right. But I'm getting there. Fun times that I'll miss when I'm gone for a few months this winter/spring.

my running habit would be nowhere without my older brother. He always runs with me when we see each other, and I get to call/text him when I am doing races -- he always encourages me. Hope to get another run or 2 in before the end of the year, too.

I worked there for some friends doing a workshop once during their "arts week." it's true that it can be hard to focus on the earth-saving/helping aspect considering the expense and privilege of being there. But the people they bring in are usually quite remarkable. And hey, the food is awesome.

wow, that is annoying. Central Park is good b/c there are always other people doing their own thing-- could you run that far north before you get going?

the SCOBY is also called "the mother", which is freaky.
Kombucha is the grossest thing I have ever craved. So weird!

elliptical backwards is always a good change of pace (I want to make a pun here like "turn the other cheek" but I can't quite work it).
that theory sounds a bit off, indeed. Nice try though, mr. trainer. maybe he was just trying to pick you up?

running, even if it's just a quick one in the morning, is a cool alt-sightseeing tour-- bonus in non-western countries where you look completely nuts running about (though not such a big deal in sophisticated Shanghai, I would imagine).

"marries new age music with Microsoft Powerpoint."-- what's not to love??
I don't have an iPhone, and I have to say that one of the main deterrents is that I don't see how something that large would integrate into my workout garb. I know there are armbands but it still seems so big/bulky for running. For cycling (and possibly hiking? depending on reception) I can definitely see the plus of having a map with you, and tracking you too.

ooh, I've seen that on there and want to try too. Did you feel like you could follow the steps?
"Without a mirror to correct me, I felt as graceful as the extremely beautiful people on the screen" << made me laugh!

I know-- I'll definitely be going back to their early class now knowing there is a high likelihood of a very small group!

My father does this. I think it's an outgrowth of Pilates (at least for him). Watching a balding, staid older gentleman in long johns balance his entire, somewhat stocky frame on a grapefruit-sized ball has provided many minutes of humor for the rest of the family, to be sure. The times I've tried it-- on a ski vacation-- it was basically like a very intense and uncomfortable massage. Like a foam roller if you've ever done that, too.

good luck-- sounds very hard to me, but healthy. One of my favorite recipe sites is 101cookbooks.com -- there are a lot of gluten and dairy-free options on there.

JI-va-MUK-ti.
I am a bit out of place to give advice on it, since I am more on the minimal side sweat-wise, but one instructor I know suggested trying not to wipe away the sweat as much-- it will just come back. Just let it go and it comes to a more balanced level. At least it's *one* theory...
