Best Kickboxing in NYC On a recent weekday afternoon, just inches above the pristine new Jill Sander boutique in an old loft building in Soho, two men are dripping with sweat, their arms are wrapped around one another, and one is kneeing the other repeatedly in the balls. Half a dozen other sweaty and violent couples are scattered across nearby mats, and a petite women in satin shorts with noticeably defined calves steps between them barking commands. Throwback to early 70s SoHo loft culture? For better or worse, no. The dominatrix in question is Emily Bearden, an ex-dancer who happens to be the 2005 WKA US Kickboxing Champion, and this is Five Point Fitness, a private gym that has emerged in recent years as one of the top kickboxing centers in the country. (And yes, those taking the beatings are wearing big pads in all the right places.)
Macapunyo yo' FACE! For those that don't know...Kali is a Philippine martial art, sometimes known as "Filipino Stick fighting", but Filipino's call it "Arnis". Its a weapons based martial art including sticks, different kinds of knifes and also open hand/unarmed. The Pekiti-Tirsia System of Kali is based on triangular movements. Its pretty complicated and takes a long time to master.
I should have not... ...taken Kettlebells before a 5 hour Kali seminar. But I did and the class was super fun but super brutal.
Joge Capoeira! Yoga this morning was fun! I was actually able to bind in the seated spinal twist. I could never figure out how to bind...it seemed so impossible and once I got into it...uhm yeah it totally feels weird and nothing like being in the regular twist. So much work to do today so I skipped my beloved Kettlebells :(
Triple feats failed! So today was my bf's niece's 1st bday. Party in the Bx with tons of Dominicans. How did I think I would get by doing no-moo, lo-gloo and unsweetened on this day? Impossible. There was nothing I could have eaten...and I totally could have gone without eating but Dominicans are much like Chinese and it would be rude to sit there not eating anything. This is probably one of my food problems.
Way too much touching for my Saturday Yoga. Its been a while since I did kettlebells! I really pushed myself today deadlifting and swinging my max. It was a fun class even though us girls lost the contest AGAIN. I tried Yoga at the gym and was disappointed. I tried so hard not to be mad at all the touching but its like she wasn't even trying to go for any verbal instruction. It was, quite honestly, an obscene amount of touching.
New Prajeat and why touching is not OK! So I took my regular Thur morning class, which I love. The instructor is quirky and talks too much. She knows my name and doesn't go overboard with touching, encouraging and gives good tips. So today I am in a forward bend with my arms clasped behind me, stretching them over my head. OK, here is the thing...I train Muay Thai.
Getting punched in the face is not funny! But it is... Did 2 Yoga classes back to back today. WHOA. Chattarunga arms are in pain! I find my hips are quite open from all this Yoga, but I also find holding poses long in my 2nd class in a row tends to be more painful. Today since I assaulted my body with tons of classes yesterday, I had to go down to child's pose more often then I wanted. BUT!
If an amputee can do Capoeira, so can you! 2 things are cool about this image of my Capoeira Batizado this year...1- Everyone is wearing my t-shirt design! 2-Check out the guy in the middle of the Roda (circle). He's an amputee!!!! Guess what? He is one of the highest cords in my whole group -he holds classes and teaches! Isn't that insanely awesome?
Sept Day 22, Where did all these bruises come from? I took 2 Yoga classes, consecutively again. The first class was awesome and fun, but by the second class, my hips and legs were not as excited anymore. Don't get me wrong the class was still cool, but I was running outta gas! After I ate a bit though, I headed to Muay Thai class. Technical sparring, so fun! But sorta getting my ass kicked. I caught a knee on that spot on the elbow that KILLS.
Sept Day 19, feeling the after effects of kettlebells... 1pm Muay Thai. Ran my mile before class to warm up. We worked our way into leg-sparring. My partner's roundhouses are getting stronger but I felt bad bc towards the end of class she started to not feel well...I think she's been on and off sick all week. Good class and despite the kettlbells from yesterday, I was able to complete 90 sit-ups in one round.
Sept Day 18, urbansherpa Bk debut! 12pm Kettlebells. Officially cleaning and push pressing with 12's! Saving the 8's for snatches and windmills. Did, push-presses, one handed swings and one handed clean and squats. Very sore. Hope I don't experience the same after pain as I did on Wed.
Sept Day 17, So glad I wore my chin zit to class this morning! Ran a slow mile before class...didn't want to push it since the day before I hit the wall with over-training. 8am Muay Thai. I expected a camera crew there, but not taping class...WTF? I woke up thinking...let me not braid my hair, let me not put make up on to go to the gym...zits all out and everything. Glad they got a close up of it, k thanks!
Sept Day 15, Fried oreos don't taste as good this year....am I really saying that? 1:30pm Mini Bhangra class w/Urbansherpa 4pm Kettlebells. I officially went up to 12kg for presses, but I am still mostly doing push-presses. When we worked in teams I noticed how much lighter the 8's started feeling! Don't get me wrong it was still hard to see-saw press set after set! 5pm Muay Thai. Padwork.
Sept Day 13, I can't seem to get enough sleep these days! So since I was cranky from lateness and no Yoga yesterday I ended up doing 40 min of Yoga on my own at home. Which made me feel much better but I was pooped at the end of the day. I am glad that all the classes I took last week has improved my form and alignment a lot. Its starting to be less painful to bind in side angle now. :) Today....
Sept Day 12, Playing too hard with kettlebells 12pm Kettlebells. OK, so there are normally 4 flat-faced 8 kg kettlebells and 2 more round ones. The round ones suck bc when you press or snatch them the bruise your wrist, even if you do it properly...or if you don't they bruise you more than the flat-faced ones. Anyhoo, one of the trainers took 2 of the nice flat-faced 8's away so we only had 2 pairs of 8's in class.
Sept Day 11, Yoga break Doing all this Yoga has made me miss my martial arts! 8am Muay Thai. Padwork, bagwork, partner work. Worked on my head teeps and low kicks and got good reviews for once! 7pm training w/D. A and I showed up early so we could practice on some techniques. Bone locking and then we did Kali for the rest of the time. Last 5 min was push-ups, somehow, I beat out all the boys today...musta been luck!
Sept Day 8, Is there a new challenge yet? I still wanna play even though I "won" something already. I never got my prize...maybe bc the prize is that I continued to workout and even did the next challenge (feats), even though I didn't get to finish... ANYHOOO.... 9am Ran 2.5 miles
Summer Day 69, I was SO not it! 1pm Muay Thai. We did bagwork for half the class, then light technical sparring. This was fun bc I was with my regular partner and she didn't kick my ass too much and we ended up laughing for most of it. Class ended with froggy tag which killed me, but was tons of fun! Rest of the day was a big huge calorie-fest. BBQ at my cousin's house and then running around chasing her 2 year old
Summer Day 64, I think there are no more feats I can accomplish. 7am Spin...Where is James P?! I noticed his name was crossed off on the sign in sheet, I was tempted to hop on the treadmill or elliptical instead...but I did wake myself up in time for spin and I thought I might bump into pjs...which I did! But I did not love the class. I didn't really understand what was goin on for most of it and I was daydreaming about Capoeira combos the whole time.
Summer Day 61, Rest in Paradise DJ AM Got to the gym early and although I was sore, and feeling shin splints coming on I still did my mile run.
