How I Got Here The classic NYC gym: vertical, state of the art, with small subterranean swimming pool. When I signed up, I mentioned I was considering Chelsea Piers as an alternative. My hard sell sales guy couldn't have been less threatened, and said somewhat annoyingly, "Go ahead, give it a try. You'll end up back here. It's too far away." Well, he wasn't entirely right.
SPLASH with Corey Hill. One of the most fun workouts ever - both workout partners showed up, and although we were all feeling a bit out of it on a Saturday morning, the class was amazingly refreshing.
I Love it When I Get the Bind Took to the mat for another Ashtanga class. I learned how to bind one of the poses. Woohoo! I can't wait until the next class to do it on my own.
More Ashtanga Another round of Ashtanga 1.5. Still in love with this class and still a challenge. I think I may have bruised my toe on a clumsy jump out to chaturanga. Need to watch that.
Sweating out tequila and scotch...ahhh... I haven't had a biiiig night out in months. Friday cured that. I woke up Saturday morning and smelled like scotch...or maybe it was tequila. Both? It was too late to cancel my private session at Real Pilates, so I dragged myself over to the studio after some whole-wheat fruit pancakes. An hour later, I was starting to feel better, but it was a little touch and go.
intenSati to Zumba Combo Platter Last Saturday's intenSati class, which I'm only writing up now, deserves a full essay. It deserves an epic poem. It was the most crowded class I've ever been in -- there must have been 100 of us in the studio. My back was literally to the wall. It seemed insane, really, before class started to think we'd all be jumping and sweating in moments. But we did.
Zumba Saturdays Back with Samuel, and the class was slightly better; though still sort of repetitive. Still, I had a breakthrough afterwards. I did my normal pushups and situps, and also some squats with kettlebell, and I used the cool cable machine on the top floor. But the best was that, just after class, I went into the empty yoga room and finally taught myself the basic samba step.
Saturday, something different part 2 I beat myself up on this day. I was trying out Equinox and wanted to get in as many experiences as possible. I'm still on the fence, perhaps I will be kicking myself for not joining this month. While the classes were fun and extremely challenging, they were all so very crowded.
Day 20 - Pilates, spinning and yoga, oh my! Two great workouts today: Noon-time private at Real Pilates to get out the tension in my body that yesterday's massage couldn't quite knock out. Then, my first go at Cycle In/Yoga Out. Amazing! 45 minutes of spin followed by 45 minutes of yoga. I'm so relaxed that it is going to be tough to rally to go out tonight!
Zumba Disappointer and PushUps Sammy was back in his regular Saturday slot, and, I must say, it wasn't his best class. Or perhaps I liked the subs more than I thought. But it was nothing but warm up; no sequence to master, just repetitions; and no cathartic moments, like holding hands and doing the Rockettes kick at the end like he once did. I suspected him of having a cold.
Derek Beres Complex Series Walking in an older man asked if the class was beginner or advanced. I said, it was Intermediate/Advanced, but not to worry, he'd be fine. Middway through I was regretting that advice. Derek did a complicated series, involving lot's of unusual hip openers, crows, transitions from upside down warrior (or whatever) to side plank to side plank with elevated leg to eagle....
Midday biking at Equinox After an hour of physical therapy, I went to Equinox to check out this guy my trainer has wanted to set me up with and to work out on the bike a little. I can't wait until I can do some other form of cardio!!!!
Morning Tuffie 7:30 AM for body sculpting, and it was the first time in a while I had been listening to Lady Gaga that early, and in pain. But worth it. I'm not sure if we had Wayne or a sub, but he was British, and reminded me vaguely of gym teachers of long ago. British accent. In much better shape than me.
Zumba with Eric Sammy was sick so we got a sub. Young asian man, big smile, adidas warm up pants, tee shirt and microphone. He started with a hugely energetic yell and a slightly violent punching motion as we did a semi-salsa step warmup. I thought dark, racial profiling thoughts: This guy has no latin rhythm. He's mechanical, and overly enthused, and very asian. IN FACT, he proved to be an amazing dancer.
Random Encounter with Personal Trainer Went to Equinox for lunchtime spin, first in a while. Sadly, my Equinox sched. is a few months out of date...and so there was no lunchtime spin. "Want to do a free 30 minute personal training session," says Andy at the desk. "Um" "It's free." "Um, ok. Sure. Why not."
Saturday Zumba with Sammy Really, it's the class I hate to love. But I do sort of love it. Sammy is the epitome of earnest, upbeat Latin male-dom; and the man can move. In front of me was a ringer: An Asian-American woman in spandex and halter who, basically, was just as good and sexy as Sammy. They greeted each other like old friends; and then we all dance for an hour. Crowded class, but not problematically so.
Sunday is Zen Combat I had no idea what "Zen Combat" would be, but I was vaguely hoping the "zen" part would be operative. In fact, it was a kickboxing class. What's with all the fancy names?
