A Journey to the Land of Extreme Wellness
January 11 - February 12
Now is a time of serious chronological potential. It's also a time of short days and overheated TV rooms. Must seize the first and avoid the second! We've found that if you want to live a healthier life, i.e. eat more kale, exercise more often, or get more sleep, it helps to actually tell someone that you want all that, and then to be held accountable, daily, for doing something about it.
That's where we come in, and this challenge, which is our very first of the new decade, and created in collaboration with the excellent people of Whole Foods Markets and Crunch Fitness. If you commit to the challenge, and track your progress online, we'll bring the Internets into your corner: Friends and complete strangers willing to cheer you on, and/or to answer your questions. To prod you, and to commiserate. Really, it's sort of cool the way it works....
As in past challenges, the New Year's Edition combines an exercise component with a collection of feats of general healthy living. Most of these are food related, but some have more to do with living green. Several are time tested classics, and others are brand new and experimental. Taken together, however, we can more or less guarantee they'll be effective. Curious? Join us!
STEP I
Join Social Workout, (if you haven't already.) It's absolutely free, entirely safe, and we'll give you a nifty personal page complete with workout tracking capabilities.
STEP II
Sign up for the challenge. This means you're committing to getting exercise on at least 20 days over the 33 days of the challenge, AND to completing 10 of the brilliants feats listed at right. Yes you can!
STEP III
Track your progress by "blogging" your workouts. (For simple instructions on how to create a "workout post," and examples, see here.) To "achieve" a feat, you simply go to that feat page, and click "Feat Accompli!" Very satisfying. Want to see how you're doing relative to everyone else? Check out the challenge Stats page.
STEP IV
Feel great, look amazing, and win some sweet prizes along the way!
WHAT ELSE?
What constitutes a workout? And who will see your posts? And can I count more than one workout a day? The answers: 1.) You tell us, and 2.) Everyone, 3.) No, and 4.) Look here for answers to these and other frequently asked questions!

Equinox in My Socks
The beauty of the Jan. Plan is (was) that you could go to happy hour, and then still hit the gym at 8:45PM. Amazing! That's what I did (last) Thursday. I had forgotten my sneakers, so I did the elliptical in socks for 20-plus minutes, some of which involved watching The Office (subtitled). Getting off, I thought (again) that watching TV really compromises a workout.

Hot Yoga and Thinking About the Love Challenge Feats
So I took an hour long Hot Vinyasa (I think it was Vinyasa anyway; I still kind of suck at telling the differences between yoga styles) Yoga class tonight after work. It was kind of a mixed bag.

SNOWPANTS ON!
Back in Snowmaggedon territory. There is SO MUCH SNOW! Piled as tall as I am. No wonder the whole city has been shut down for the week. Needed one last workout so I made it snow related. Shoveling, making snowballs, snowmen and snow angels until my clothes were drenched and I could no longer feel my toes.
Good times.
Eleventh Hour DIY Finish
I know I'm finishing this feat by the skin of my teeth, but here it is -- I actually finished cooking about an hour ago, but taking pictures and blogging it has taken me a bit longer!

Got in one final workout for the New Year's Challenge, just for good measure: another shot of Week 3 running training w/ Robert Ullrey's Couch to 5k. Also snuck in another bath (I've taken more baths in the last month than I think I took all of last

Last night was the first time I used a HRM with my workout and found that I needed to be very diligent in staying inside the acceptable range. I was all over the range.
