Feat
Whole Grainy

Say goodbye to white bread and processed, bleached flour, and hello to whole grains. "White" grains have far less nutritional value than the unprocessed sort. Without question, you want all of nature's goodness and potency. SO, skip the white bread, the plain jane English muffins, and the hamburger buns. Go for rich pumpernickel or rye or even whole wheat pasta. Rock on!

I hit the wrong button. I thought I was signing up for it. But I can do this since that is one thing I'm working on doing.

I go wholewheat generally anyway, but am with msh - how long for?!

I am with CakeorDeath- I do this anyway so I am claiming it now.
Submitted by Llaves on 01.05.10 at 11:05.
I did the wholewheat switch a few months ago actually - it's great and I haven't missed the white stuff since!

Has anyone tried sprouted grain pastas? Finally got used to the sprouted grain bread.
Submitted by lnj913 on 01.05.10 at 11:52.
NEVER eat the white stuff! This is easy :)
Submitted by michlny on 01.08.10 at 12:21.
I'm guessing white rice probably counts?
Submitted by snowpeach on 01.10.10 at 07:16.
I've done this for awhile now!

Hey all -- wholegrainy is for the entire 33 days.
Submitted by Katie B. on 01.11.10 at 07:34.
easy-peasy, I haven't had the white stuff in years.
Submitted by jan1965 on 01.11.10 at 08:42.
I already use wholegrain bread. But eliminating white flour will be a challenge because I'm a cookie-aholic. Does anybody have recipes for cookies using whole wheat? Oatmeal, oatmeal/raisin, peanut butter, and chocolate chip cookies are my favorites. Well okay, I love Oreos, too, but I'm pretty sure those are on the no-no-list for the next 30 days, :-))

So since I made the mistake of clicking the button (I'm new here and thought that I was "joining" the feat, not marking it finished), I'm being very careful to be sure I eat whole grain.
Oatmeal for breakfast.
Submitted by lhlady517 on 01.12.10 at 12:12.
I already mostly do this, pasta being the usual exception, because, until recently, I hadn't found a whole-grain pasta that wasn't gritty. But Whole Foods sells this brand called Gia Rossa that is whole grain with no grit, if anyone needs a suggestion. It's delicious.
Submitted by neversent on 01.12.10 at 05:31.
this is probably the easiest feat of them all, i always find white "grains" to be less flavorful than the whole grain products.
Submitted by seearirun on 01.13.10 at 03:16.
Ditto. Been doing whole grain for years. Good wholemeal pasta--here in Oz, anyway--are San Remo's spirals and penne. Their spag is not so good, though.

White Flour and I dont get along!! I guess this means only whole wheat cookies!
Submitted by Gia Alvarez on 01.15.10 at 07:09.
Ever since I was a child, I've been 100% whole grain.
Submitted by @HereNow on 01.16.10 at 04:48.
I always eat whole grain or multi grain... I have stayed away from the white bread stuff for the last two years
Submitted by FrogOmnibus on 01.17.10 at 01:36.
does the rice paper stuff on dumplings or shumai count as not whole grain?
Submitted by vonhottie on 01.17.10 at 11:14.
I was trying so hard to go sugar free that I ordered a sandwich on ciabatta for lunch. I was starved and I ate it. Rolene says I can make up for this by doing something extraordinary, like baking my own whole grain bread and sharing it with her, but I'm looking for volunteer opportunities so I can Share The Love, since I think I've Blown The Feat.
Submitted by whatodds on 01.19.10 at 07:58.
Yeah - you can't eat white rice. Sorry! Brown rice actually has a richer taste if you ask me!

I like buying yummy whole wheat muffins and making brown rice risotto....yum...

Submitted by jmmartim on 01.26.10 at 12:29.
I am going to go ahead and mark this now, because I've been doing it since the start of the challenge and have no intention of cheating before it's over, and I want to be able to better keep track of th feats on here!

If anyone is interested, there was a good article (wth recipe) about whole grain muffins in the NY Times:

Mission accomplished! Completed with the dry sauteed string beans over brown rice that I had for lunch today. I have to say, I'm excited to have some non-whole wheat pasta (the only thing I really missed), but I'm glad to have found a wheat version I like.
