Ladies: If I may, let me offer some advice for how to get a dead-hang pull-up or chin-up if you can't do one yet . . .
1. F--- the gravitron.
2. Can you jump yourself into a pull-up? (ie, jump to bar, either from ground/ step-aerobics step/ weight bench and use momentum to get yourself up there.) If so, do jumping pull-ups. Just make sure to a) CLOSE the pull-up at the top (squeeze shoulder blades, get high as you can, aim to touch chest to bar) and b) lower down as SLOWLY as possible. Use the lowest start you can for your jump. Do one, rest, do another as soon as you can. Try to get three sets of five in. You will get stronger at this in no time.
3. Negative pull-ups: get up to a chin-over-bar position however you can (step-stool, or friend to help you), and lower yourself as slowly as possible. Lower through your whole range of motion (arms totally straight), repeat, repeat, repeat, etc.
4. If you DO use the gravitron (or a better option, gigantic rubber bands), at least make sure you're going through total range of motion so you have to engage your shoulders at the bottom every time and close the pull-up at the top (shoulder blade squeeze and hold it a splitsecond).
Okay, that's what I got. Also, believe in yourself! And watch the beginning of Terminator 2: Judgment Day as often as possible.

I agree with body electric, if you cannot do a pull-up or chin-up, one of the best methods for increasing your strength to eventually perform one is by doing negative pull-ups.

Thanks for the advice! I tried a chin-up for the first time (since high school anyway) yesterday. It was hard! Harder than I expected. Luckily there is a park 1 block from my house with pull up bars so I can practice often. Clearly I will need it!

This was not possible for me. the 10:1 male:female ratio seems a bit too much.

Not gonna lie, I was proud of myself today...I did 10 chin ups and then I was also able to do 7 wide-grip pull ups as well! Feeling stronger already!
