Welcome to the Holidays....
The end of the year should be nothing but good cheer and love. But sometimes it can get a little out of hand. Too many parties, too much food, not enough sleep, and pretty soon you want to kill just about every person in front of you in the gift-wrap line, not to mention your immediate family. Must not take the holidays lying down. A little planning and self-discipline will go a very long way over the next month, and what can be very helpful is to have a merry band of virtual wellness buddies helping you out at bar or buffet or gym.
So, we bring you Social Workout's fifth challenge of 2009, and our first ever actually created by SW users! As always, we combine an exercise component with a brilliant collection of seasonally appropriate feats....
Here's how it works:
STEP I
Join Social Workout, (if you haven't already.) It's absolutely free, entirely safe, and we'll give you a nifty personal page complete with workout tracking capabilities.
STEP II
Sign up for the challenge. This means you're committing to getting exercise on at least 20 days over the holidays, AND to completing 10 of the brilliants feats listed at right. Piece of cake!
STEP III
Track your progress by "blogging" your workouts. (For simple instructions on how to create a "workout post," and examples, see here.) To "achieve" a feat, you simply go to that feat page, and click "Feat Accompli!" Very satisfying. Want to see how you're doing relative to everyone else? Check out the challenge Stats page. (Note: You can also click on the calendar image above, or here, to get your very own 8 1/2 by 11 PDF download of the challenge feats postcard!)
STEP IV
Feel great, look amazing, and win some sweet stocking stuffers along the way!
WHAT ELSE?
What constitutes a workout? And who will see your posts? And can I post more than one workout a day? The answers: 1.) You tell us, and 2.) Everyone, 3.) No, and 4.) Look here for answers to these and other frequently asked questions!

Military Attack
Marion's riding us into the New Year with force. We climbed for 10 minutes adding resistance eight times--- the eighth time really killed. The first six minutes we kept a strong cadence, like a one, two, one two beat. we climed to "it's gettin hot in here" for the last four minutes and we slowed the cadence down to a one.two.one.two. beat.

New Year's Day Swim
In salty, cold Tomales Bay. Naked. Yelling and splashing.
It was very brief, but it was also very cold. In terms of the battle with inertia, I think it was significant. Plus there were sun salutations before and after, and some morning salsa. Altogether, I'll count it.

Estero Estuary Work on Tomales Bay
Tom and I piled into his car and picked up Yann, and then M. at the Bovine Bakery in Pt. Reyes Station. Next stop the Estero, a long path across rolling, mostly treeless green mini mountains -- a peninsula between Tomales Bay and the Pacific. We walked out chatting, stopping to look at lilttle crater ponds, and also to look at the cows which stood motionless as if in a modernist still life.

Yoga in Berkeley
Arrive at the Clydes in Berkeley and Coley suggest yoga the next morning at her friend's house. Turns out the friend is Erica Tanov, of Nolita clothing boutique fame, and also ApartmentTherapy.com apartment tour fame.
Not too bad for my first

AG Fitness Resort - Final Day
So it's the last day of 2009. The last day in paradise. The last day of my Fitness Resort AKA parents house in Santa Barbara. Argh, I'm not ready to stop this fantastic regime of workouts, fresh air, sun, surf and water.

AG Fitness Resort - Wednesday
This morning I woke up tired. Really tired. My mind was ready to go, but my body was sore, fatigued, and my arms were beat from last nights boxing workout. My quads shook when I tried to sit down. My calves yelped as I got up on my toes to open up the chicken coop. So my cure? Water, and more Yoga.
ehc recap
i joined the EHC, not because the holidays are a particularly rough time for me, but because i mostly hate winter. that icy, pricking through your coat, blistering your cheeks cold, the short days, and the dramatic change between radiator heat and outside chill. haterade to the nth degree.
