October 1st - 31st. Our latest experiment in massive collective healthiness.

So glad you're here. Eat.Sweat.Blog is the fourth Social Workout challenge, and the first ever focused on healthy eating. Our mission, as always, is to fight back against the urban grind — the overworking and undersleeping, the serial restauranting, heavy cocktailing, and missed gym dates, not to mention the creeping cigarette or caffeine habits.

The city is like a giant buffet: Fabulous, and easy to abuse. Staying in touch with body and mind is absolutely possible, but it requires some effort, and vigilance. We've found that setting goals helps a lot, as does a bit of group energy and inspiration. We've got your back. Here's how it works: 

STEP I

Join Social Workout, (if you haven't already.) It's absolutely free, entirely safe, and we'll give you a nifty personal page complete with workout tracking capabilities.

STEP II

Sign up for the challenge. This means you're committing to getting exercise on at least 20 days in October, AND to completing 10 of our 22 feats of healthy eating. (See list at right.) Piece of cake!

STEP III

Track your progress by "blogging" your workouts. (For simple instructions on how to create a "workout post," and examples, see here.) To "achieve" a feat, you simply go to that feat page, and click "Feat Accompli!" Very satisfying. Want to see how you're doing relative to everyone else? Check out the challenge Stats page.

STEP IV

Feel great, look amazing, win prizes, and save the world! Your health is your greatest award, but to push things along a little we've sweetened the pot. For the first 100 challengers who sign up, Whole Foods Market will donate $20 to City Harvest, the world's first food rescue program.

Last Crazy Day: Just Water, Unsweetened, Raw, Brightly Colored, Localvore....

Woke up and inadvertently had a dry piece of whole grain toast. I plan to ignore that. Headed to the farmers market at Abington Park to hunt and gather. Filled bags with apples of two varieties, as well as local lima beans, a box of amazing grapes, and purple/black/yellow string beans. Also a green pepper. All local. All raw. All colorful.

Friday 5 Rhythms and Lifethyme Part I

Tagged along with Sascha again to Tami's 5 Rythmns class at the Joffrey. Once again I felt weird and awkward at first, but then got into it. Priceless moment watching the joy on some of the dancers faces. The rational part of my brain still arguing that I should use that time to do something like salsa, where I can "improve," but the release and communal feeling is powerful.

Thursday Late Yoga and Hot Water with Lemon

Hit Rock and Roll Anusara with Geoff Devaul, and found myself feeling reasonably good. Jumped with two legs into handstand. SHoulders still sketchy, but caffeine headache mostly gone, and energy good.

Spin Plus Day Four of Unsweetened Just Water Caffeine Free Go Veggie....

Katie B. and I met up with the Equinox crew at 6PM to do a walk through for the 11/4 party. After, I slipped into Shaina Manning's one hour spin class. She was a bit strident and screechy, but certainly full of energy. Lot's of "Go faster," and "Give it all," and I wasn't overly impressed.

Tuesday Iron Body Cardio Comedy

A. rescheduled our 5:30PM, so I shot up to the 19th Street Equinox, scanned the next available class, and discovered it was "Iron Body Cardio." Sure. Enter the room and it's about eight women, all clutching kettlebells, and Amanda Young, Asian American instructor with headset and firm, but friendly, bemused attitude. Only spot available is front and center.

Salsa Mondays Redux

Made it to class EARLY. Life suddenly on schedule given new diet. Danced with new Australian named Kirsten, and also again with Carla. Made some progress, but still the guy in the mirror looked like an awkward, tall, white guy in jeans....

Last day last run

Well, for the last day of the challenge the world decided to give me one last beautiful day for a long run, so I took it. Down along the waterfront to Queensbridge Park and back, lots to see and people out in the world. Perfect. 6.3 m.

Crawling past the Eat.Sweat.Blog finish line.

Friday night met msh258 at Crunch and proceeded to have a rowing machine race. She beat me by ONE stroke. I demand a re-do. We also did some headstands which are really hard if you keep laughing at each other. Ate some pumpkin to finish my last SWeAT.

almost as good as the ultimate stickybun foliage ride -- the ride to the brooklyn halloween festival/block party extravaganza-carnival on clinton street and dinner with friends.

officially the filthiest ride, but arrived in nyack happy despite a mouthfull-o-grit and five-o'clock-shadow-appearing body (road grit), happy because the leaves were at their peak and it was a fun ride.
