Victoria Stilwell on the Joys of Dog Walking and Parks

Dog trainer Victoria Stilwell is the host of Animal Planet's series "It's Me or the Dog." Her insights and advice for positive, reward-based dog training can be found on Positively.com.

We have a chocolate lab, and having a dog you have to exercise, because you have to exercise your dog every day. It's not fair if you don't. And that's a great thing. Even if I don't feel like it, I have to go, and then of course after I've finished my walk, I feel great.

Poetry-Inspired Walks to Remember

April is National Poetry Month, and as one of the undergraduate poets at the Sarah Lawrence Poetry Festival last week declared in a reading, it's also the month "the sky shook off its clothes and was brilliant." With the influx of (mostly) good weather, and the Million Minute Month staring down its well-measured and long barrel at us, it's time to peek our wintered heads out of our proverbial doors and start poking around again. In honor of poetry, and weather, and accruing those walking minutes, I've assembled a few walks to try, from the Edgar Allan Poe Walking Tour to the Windy City Stroll. Links after the jump.

Prescription Dance Classes

Wondering what to get grandma for her 80th birthday? If Driver's Yoga isn't for her, here's another hot option: Dance classes. A new study by the University of Missouri shows that seniors who take dance classes show marked increases in walking speed and balance, which is great for zooming around, but even better for reducing the risk of falling. Seniors in the test group were not only speedier and sturdier, they liked the dance classes so much that they clamored for them to continue after their initial 18-week test period. In sum: Everyone should dance more, grandmas included.

Afternoon Stretch

I Love to Power Walk!

"I once met a 98 year old shoe cobbler in North Carolina who didn't look a day over 60. When I asked him what his secret was, he told me he walks 2 miles to work, and 2 miles back from work, 7 days a week....Now, after being introduced to Social Workout through my husband, I find myself thinking about that 98 year-old cobbler. And if I had to pick one physical activity that I truly enjoyed, it would have to be power walking." — Meta-Challenge, yesterday, 10:06 P.M.

Picking up the Pace with the Pooch and Stretching it out

Today I had a good stretch with the dog hoofing it around the neighborhood.  I can't usually count his walks because he stops every 10 feet to sniff everything in sight.  It was a good day, however, and we were able to really get going for once.

I also took a Gentle Restorative Yoga class to ease my aching muscles back into fitness.  Fabulous as always.

More Dodging of Tourists on Brooklyn Bridge, plus a Cherry Blossom Viewing

I started off my Million Minutes with a walk to and from Manhattan across the Brooklyn Bridge.  From there, I headed over to the Botanical Garden, although I didn't count that in minutes since it was a more casual stroll.  I did see a couple get engaged right as we walked down the Cherry Esplanade - so romantic!

Walking. Outside. Sunshine. Gloriousness.

Ahh, warm weather. I am so much happier when it is nice and sunny outside. My roommate and I had been planning a walk along the Potomac River and we finally both had time for it on Wednesday. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint.

Gorgeous weather, exercise outside, the company of a great friend, and some serious eye candy. What's not to love?

Long Walk Through San Francisco

"I am on my first vacation in years! ...I made the concious decision I wanted to walk everywhere today, to see more things, and it was wonderful. I saw details, purple flowers on cement walls, wrought iron fencing, even just the feel of the hills underfoot, that I never would have really known had I just hopped on the Muni. All told, I walked 11 miles." — mssarcastic3, today, 12:01 A.M.

Wake Up Call

Walk Yourself

Above all, do not lose your desire to walk. Every day I walk myself into a state of well-being and walk away from every illness. I have walked myself into my best thoughts, and I know of no thought so burdensome that one cannot walk away from it.
