Compress More Calories Out of Your Workout

Spanx, as Wanda Sykes says, suck your stuff in so you don't look like an amoeba. But not all "shapewear" is content to stop there. ShaToBu, the squeezy looking garment in the photo left, is designed with "seamless resistance bands" that supposedly make your muscles work harder and burn more calories when you're walking. And new research says they work, at least a little bit. In the study, conducted at the University of Virginia (but funded in part by a grant from ShaToBu's maker, mind you) women burned between 3% and 16% more calories while walking on a treadmill when they were wearing their ShaToBu compression undies. Whether a small boost in calorie expenditure is worth thigh bondage is another question. Plus, there are already so many good options on the market — suits of armor, balls and chains...

Whistler

Got whistled at on my way to work.  My husband, who walks with me, looked suddenly and comically ready to hurt somebody.  When I lived in St. Louis, that kind of thing happened all the time, but since moving to more rural environments... and driving everywhere... and gaining a few pounds as a result of driving everywhere...

Where Do You Find Your Inspiration?

I live in a lovely neighbourhood (yes, neighBOURhood, I'm Canadian. Ha ha) that is quite beautiful and special and great for walking.  I like to put on my little runners and head down to the water. Every so often I would meet people on my walk who would say "Hello",  "Keep it up", "Good for you" and smile.  One on walk in particular a truck of city workers were waving and giving me thumbs up. I was trying to figure out if I knew them or if they were making fun of me, but I realized they were cheering me on.

Any tips on walking/biking to work in the muggy Spring weather?

Are there any expert workout-to-workers out there?  I have a 40-minute walk to and from work.  I could drive, but this way seems better for me and my ancient car.  I bring a change of clothes, but I could use some tips on getting them to and from work looking less like I stuffed them in the bottom of a backpack.

Happy Walk

Had the afternoon to myself yesterday, as I am still jobless (anyone got any leads?!), so I went into Manhattan, armed with a bag of mango slices and a coconut water, and walked around for a few hours. It was my goal to not stop walking until my friends got off work to meet me for dinner, and that's what I did. Walked, munched on mango, and people watched. Lovely.

Apartment hunting is a workout in itself. AND I ran today.

First full day back in New York. Woke up early this morning for a three mile run through Bushwick, then took to the streets for some serious apartment hunting. Met five different realtors throughout the day and saw I-can't-even-remember how many apartments. Found the one I wanted at 1 pm but kept searching til 6, just in case.

Old Grandma Hardcore and the Couch to 5k

Every time I put on my shorts and shoes and set off around the neighborhood, it hits home again how a commitment to fitness really means committing to looking ridiculous for a small part of every day.  If you can do that, you can get fit.  If you can't stand to be the worst one in Boot Camp, and watch some Old Grandma Hardcore truck up the hill past you, you will never make it.

So Much Food

Walked home from work, with brief stops at the hubs' lab and the bank.  If only I hadn't had to walk past dozens of restaurants smelling alluringly of foods that no one should ever eat.  I managed to resist based on having recently read a review of "The End of Overeating."  There's nothing like a Jungle-style description of trans fats and what they do to your body to put

Walk to work

Walking to and from work every day, in my mind, is kind of the base-line exercise you do if you are not a complete and total couch potato.  For me, it's not a long walk-- 2.4 miles each way-- but from the way my family and co-workers react, you'd think I was hiking the Appalachian trail every morning.  Of course I can happily bask in the glow of all their admiration and wonder, but th
