Giuliana & Bill Make All Their Big Life Decisions While Engaging In Sports Popular In The 90's

If television is a cultural barometer, what can we learn about health and well-being from our regular viewing? von Hottie presents a totally unscientific sampling of the health and fitness "wisdom" she gleaned this week from a random selection of television shows. WARNING: spoiler alerts and weird substitutes for alcohol ahead.

  • Giuliana & Bill: Last season, G & B tried to get pregnant the old-fashioned way. This season, they are considering IVF, so of course they go rollerblading to discuss this major life decision. They also take a morning constitutional on the beach to discuss how much Giuliana needs a new assistant — she's so busy she doesn't have time to eat breakfast before their power walk! Bill says she needs to get an assistant ASAP because she doesn't need any more stress while they try to conceive. They decide on IVF and, oh my giant ovaries, they have to pick up five large shopping bags of hormones and medications from the fertility doctor! Giuliana's mom comes into town to make sure Giuliana doesn't take any business calls and to feed Giuliana a lot of pasta. Luckily, everything goes well and the IVF works!

Swimmers' Version of Everest: "Ocean's Seven"

Extreme swimming is old hat. Cross the English Channel? Ho hum. Circle Manhattan? Whatevs. OK, so now it's not about doing any single insane feat of swimming endurance, it's about doing all seven of the great swims. The Wall Street Journal has the story:

Steven Munatones, a coach and marathon swimming guru...devised the Ocean's Seven—a list of channels that a well-rounded marathoner should master—and posted it on his website devoted to distance swimming. There's the English Channel, for old time's sake; as well as the Catalina crossing; Cook Strait in New Zealand; the Tsugaru Channel in Japan; and the shortest, the Strait of Gibraltar, about eight miles between Spain and Morocco. Most swimmers say the toughest are the Molokai Channel in Hawaii, at 26 miles, and the frigid North Channel between Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Think of that next time you're swimming laps. Just for reference: It takes 24 hours to swim to Catalina Island from Los Angeles....

Workout

taking the waters

Sometimes you need to take a break just so you can get back to center.  Such was the case with me.  I just got back from 10 days in Austin, which involved - in addition to good food, company and conversation - a harness-based yoga class at Castle Hill Fitness, natural springs, baby

running, swimming & the Highbridge

I woke up at the crack of dawn this morning.  The air coming in through the window was cool for August and I was craving a run, so I slipped on my running shorts (yes! me in the shorts again!) and I went for a half-hour jog in and around the lovely Ft.

Going The Distance

Two hundred meters from finishing my workout last night the masters swim team took over my lane. Rather than leave without reaching my goal of swimming a mile, I slipped into another lane to knock out my last two laps. But to make the hassle of changing lanes worth it, I went for broke and swam an extra 400 meters on top of the 200 to reach an even 2,000 meters -- my longest swim yet!

How does sculling in swimming work?

I am amazed that with a wave of my hand I can "grab" the water and move myself forward farther and faster with each stroke when swimming. How does this work?

Successful Outdoor Swimming

"I've been struggling with laps at the outdoor pool because I want to wear a cute swimsuit (not my racing suit) while lounging poolside, but cute swimsuits are not functional. But I think I finally figured out what to wear -- my tankini. This seems to satisfy my vanity while still reducing drag and giving my arms free range of motion...."

Workout

I did not trip today and spent time floating in the ocean.

After Friday's self managed run, I decided to ask the hotel people if they had a trainer available for the rest of the week. I haven't gone that route yet, and since I'm only here for a few days, I figured it might be a good way to test those waters. Renting a cabana at this resort only costs $30 a day, so I am guessing a trainer couldn't possibly charge NYC prices per hour either.

1st Swim of the Year! or, how not to lose your swim bottoms in front of the neighbors

In the bedroom mirror, finding your swimsuit is a little loose is a fantastic thing!  Less so when you decide to execute a glorious dive into the deep end of the neighborhood pool.
