Kelly Ripa Thinks There's Something Sexy About The Sound Of A Group Workout
"I prefer a group mentality. I think there's power in a group, I think the group motivates everybody. I think everybody really pulls together, and there's something sexy about the sound and look of a unified group of people working out."
— Kelly Ripa, explaining to Bryant Gumbel that he's really missing out by sticking to solo workouts instead of following her into the wonderful world of spinning.

Spinning Spin-Offs
Yesterday we reported that SoulCycle was expanding its offerings with SoulDance, a class designed to "ignite your inner SEXY SOUL! ...[with] everything from basic ballet to simmering chair routines." Unclear whether or not those simmering chair routines would be performed on a bike seat... But today we got another email from SoulCycle, this one introducing "Soul Pilates," and this one made it very clear: "This class is taught entirely OFF the bike." So it's really just Pilates, taught at SoulCycle, which I guess is what makes it "Soul Pilates." Which makes you wonder, when a spin studio starts offering lots of different fitness classes, does it just become a gym, but more expensive? Or is this just a nice way to give spinners some cross training? Debate and discuss. (I think it might be Option A, but maybe that's just me being mean).

My Social Workout Challenge Begins With A Spin Showdown
Today's free workout: Crunch, 83rd street, courtesy of the Social Workout/Crunch Get Schooled Challenge. I've been in NYC for a week, but finally, today, I felt as if I had returned. To be honest, my workouts up to this point had been sub-par. I was sluggish, I was lazy, and it showed in both the quality of my gymhops and in my energy levels. But not today. No, today I started Social Workout's Crunch Get Schooled Challenge, which dares reader/exercisers to work out 20 times, do 8 Crunch classes, and log 20 healthy meals, all in the next 28 days.

Big Spinning Discounts at The Studio
Spinning: Awesome, but pricey. Classes at spin studios can set you back like $30 a pop.* Which is why we thought we should raise a special flag for today's NYC Groupon — 6 spin classes for $55 at The Studio. Located in a townhouse on the UES, at The Studio you pedal away under very UES-appropriate chandeliers. And FYI, $55 is 71% off the usual six-class price of, gulp, $192.
*College students with an ID can ride for $5 at Ride The Zone; Flywheel offers a $180/month unlimited pass, which makes it cheap(er) if you ride a lot, but still expensive if you only dabble.

was camping all weekend, now back to the grind
45 min spin class
20 min core
Then working on the 20 pull up challenge. Is it a really bad sign that I can barely even do the negative pull-ups in week -2? I've been working on the pull-up machine with a 30 lb counter weight. Kinda frustrating to have to start there, but I'm determined to make it to 20 pullups. Even if it takes me til the end of the year.

Chelsea and Bill Spin For $100K
How much do people love spinning? Or maybe the better question is, how much do people who love spinning love the Clintons? So much that Soul Cycle's hour long ride with Bill and Chelsea this weekend raised more than a $100,000 for the Clinton Foundation Haiti Fund. Very nice. And also intriguing. I've developed a theory: I think it has something to do with spandex. Spandex is not a conservative fabric. The more spandex you wear, the more liberal you are. Spinning and its full body spandex...you do the math.

Ryan rekindled my love for spinning!
I took Ryan Murray's spin class on Monday, it was FANTASTIC.. challenging, great playlist... and I just love how he motivates everyone. I was going so fast, during the sprints, I could not believe that I was doing 145 RPM, he had us sprint for 30 secs, I think.. and i was able to do it... He is also very helpful and compassionate. He gets off the bike to help folks..

I had a sneaking suspicion this would be true...
Today is day 1 of the 20 pull-up challenge. First step is obviously assessing how many pull-ups you can do. I haven't even attempted a pull-up since middle school, and I couldn't do any then, so I figured I'd still be at zero. I was absolutely correct. That puts me in the elite group who gets to start at week -2 as opposed to week 1! Anyways, week -2 basically just
