Women Not As Good at Skipping Calories After Soda As Men Are

The fact that Americans swallow gallons of corn syrup in the form of soda on a regular basis undoubtedly contributes to our collective obesity. But new research shows that we're remarkably good at compensating for our liquid calorie intake in the short term. In the study, men and women who drank milk, orange juice, or a sugary fruit drink mid-morning, consumed fewer calories when unleashed on a lunch buffet than they did after consuming a calorie-free drink. So, good for us — our bodies recognize liquid calories and our appetites adjust. But here's the catch: Women weren't as good at compensating for the caloric drink calories as men were.

Every day, we give you a snapshot of one fellow striver in fitness. We ask personal questions, he or she boldly answers. Today's snapshot: Sarah, aka scratchinpizzle.

  • What's your go-to workout? Anything that makes me focus on the fact that I'm having fun rather than the fact that I'm actually working out. Right now, it's Zumba. I love it, even when I feel silly with the booty shakin'- on the inside I envision that I'm like Shakira. Leaving the place drenched in sweat is awesome, I always feel happy and accomplished afterwards.
  • What's your secret (fitness-related) sin? I hate cardio. I hate running. I really can't do anything unless it's in a class or some kind of competitive format. The SW challenges are truly a blessing cause they give me a sense of obligation, and I manage to get things done for the small victory of seeing the numbers add up.

Diabetes Lurks Around Every Corner

Barring a major lifestyle change in America, the number of cases of diabetes in the country will almost double in the next 25 years, and the cost of diabetes care will spike from $113 billion to $336 billion per year. Doh! Healthcare reform is good, but what we really need are healthier Americans.

And while we're on the subject, heads up to those of you planning to procreate in the next seven days: Women who drink five or more sweet sodas in the week prior to getting preggers run a 22% greater chance of developing "gestational diabetes." (The basic incidence is about 6%.) Need to get in the mood? Lay off the Jack and Coke.

Recalled Meat, Colbert Speed Skaters, and Jogglers

  • Fairbanks Farms, a meat processor in New York, has recalled half a million pounds of ground beef due to E.Coli contamination. The meat was sold at Giant, Trader Joe's, BJ's and Price Chopper. Bought any ground beef at TJ's lately? Look for the USDA mark of inspection on the packaging — if it says "EST. 492" inside the mark, throw it away.
  • October is over, but you should stay off soda anyway. Sugar sodas make you fat, and so do diet sodas. Diet sodas can also damage your kidneys. And there's always a chance that your can of soda could be a spy camera in disguise.
  • Short-burst interval training gets better results in less time, even for amateurs, reports MSNBC.
  • Jogglers (joggers who juggle) and costumed runners keep the back of the pack interesting, reports the New York Times.
  • Johns Hopkins researchers have found that fatty acids are essential for the brain's learning and memory functions.  Also, scientists have discovered a new gene in fruit flies that controls the metabolism of fat.
  • And, being in a bad mood can also improve your memory.
  • "The Colbert Report" is now the primary sponsor of the U.S. Speedskating team. Team uniforms will now be emblazoned with "Colbert Nation."

Catch-up Post #3 - Rock climbing

So my goal is to finish posting last week's workouts before I forget them all. I also took my lunch to work every day last week, so I'm halfway to my brownbag feat! I've also been pretty good about soda this month. I do admit, I did have a rootbeer float before I realized rootbeer is in fact a soda.

Impractical Eating

DIY Kombucha!

A new study finally proves what an old Russian taxi driver once told me: Soda makes you weaker. (Seems the ingredients in your typical cola actually disturb the potassium levels in your blood, and can weaken muscles.) This is, of course, why alt beverages are big these days, and especially trendy probiotic drinks like Kombucha, a fermented tea that's got all the fizz of a soda but actually shows some health benefits. Kombucha helps the good bacteria in your gut to thrive, improving digestion, and may also help to relieve joint or muscle pain. AT $4 a bottle, however, you can quickly go broke if you drink alot. [Eds Note: It's true. We've seen Manhattan moms strap their children into car seats and hit the road to find bulk Kombucha discounts not available at local Whole Foods.

There's a better way: Try making your own. The following may seem a bit like a high school biology class, but it's easy to do, gives excellent results, and is eco friendly and very easy on the wallet. (There's even a whole Flickr community dedicated to the DIY kombooch.) Without further ado, the first step is to grow your own living SCOBY (i.e. Symbiotic Colony of Bacteria and Yeast)...
