Saturday: WABA 50 States Ride (metric century full of HILLS!)

Sunday: Navy 5-Miler

Sunday night; Exhausted, sore, and completely proud that I can bust out such feats after not having run in a few weeks, and the last long bike ride (40 miles) I did having been last summer.

Monday: maintaining a proud glow.

Running again

I ran this morning for the first time in a while.

It was cool out with a few sprinkles. I found out that I can still run hills.

It was perfect.

Workout Wear

It's Seasonal Gear Shift Time

Happy first day of Fall. Now that summer is over and done with it's time to go shopping. Well, for me to go shopping. Truth be told up until recently all of my exercise happened within the confines of the gym. I like it there, everything is organized and climate controlled...and I can wear the same black yoga capris and t-shirts to workout all year round. I've never had to amp up my fitness wardrobe for a change in climate before. But thanks to a newfound love of the outdoors I'm left with a dilemma...what the f@#k do I wear now? Lucky for me, and you, I did some research.

Survey Says

Sweat By The Numbers

On any given day, what percentage of adults in the U.S. would you say work up a sweat? Twenty percent? Maybe ten percent? Sadly, the number is actually....5%. That's right, according to a recent study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, only 5% of us on any given day do anything that qualifies as "vigorous activity." While the gym may look packed, only 2.2% of people report using cardio equipment on any given day. And that's the most frequently reported vigorous activity! Running gets a mere 1.1% participation. Meanwhile, 80.1% of us are watching TV or movies every day. Rather troublingly, on your average day, only 78.9 percent of people report washing, dressing, or grooming themselves (which qualifies as a light activity).

What to do when you find a live blue crab in the street

Run the block home, grab your camera and steel wool glove, and run back. Take a photo, then pick the crab up and run home. Make a delicious breakfast.

In addition to those three blocks of running, I went for a 3 mile run today.

Should You Stretch Before You Run?

Yes, said my high school track coach. It'll help prevent injuries. No, said my dad. It'll actually lead to more injuries. So who's right?  Turns out, no one (as unsatisfying as that is). USA Track and Field has just published the results of an extensive new study of almost 1,400 runners ages 13 to 60 assigned to either stretch before running or not stretch before running for a three-month period. Bottom line: Stretching didn't matter. Regardless of which group they were in, the stretchers or the non-stretchers, runners sustained injuries at about exactly the same rate. No higher, no lower. So stretching before doesn't cause injuries and it doesn't prevent injuries. So do it if you like it, and skip it if you don't. Now, stretching after exercise, that's a whole nother story... 30 minute run

Although I didn't go nearly as far as I used to in that half hour, still got 30 minutes of sweating in this morning! Not bad after a 40 hour work week of farming and 12 hours of commuting.

Tales from the Trail

Competition: It's Pretty

I’ve never been a particularly competitive person. What other people do really couldn’t matter less to me. Perhaps it’s narcissism—I’m pretty focused on myself. I steer clear of sports and group activities, and flourish in solo endeavors.

So far this has worked out pretty well for me; then a gorgeous, long-legged Columbian woman in tiny running shorts came into my life. I don’t know her name…I just know that she is my arch-rival.

Since my last post on July 14, I have either been

*driving from Des Moines to Minnesota

*driving from Minnesota to Texas

*teaching, directing, administrating a three-week opera program

*cleaning up and unpacking after a summer on the road and getting ready for my trip to New York.
