goodyoga: The Brooklyn Yoga Ashram

We've been hearing good things about about goodyoga for a while now. The Greenpoint yoga studio is all about being more than a yoga studio. Add in accommodations, workspace, resident pets, a communal kitchen, a wellness center, and a mission to build an inclusive community that "welcomes every new member and provides support and encouragement during every stage of our practice," and you start to get the picture. Think ashram, but Brooklyn-loft-style. I still haven't made it out for a visit, but our friends over at it's all yoga, baby spent Labor Day weekend there, and official report? Very good.

Bleeding Edge

David Beckham, Fitness Video Games and Thigh Chafing

This just in from Gamescon, a giant video game trade show in Germany: David Beckham, soccer legend, is to be the spokesperson for EA Sports Active 2, a blockbuster new fitness game from Electronic Arts to be released in November. It's been at least six months since we last checked the state-of-the-art in fitness video games, so I watched the "trailer" to see how far things have come. (Video after the jump.) My immediate thoughts: First, fitness video game trailers are a very tough genre. Second, the new Microsoft Kinect full-body motion sensing strap-on devices look like those dog training collars that transmit electric shocks to your barker of a dog.

Early Promising Word on Bar Method Soho

Soho Mom filed the report to my voicemail just before 8 A.M.: "The place was packed at 6:30 A.M.," she said. "My thighs are shaking." I listened with cheek glued to mattress, bleary eyed from last glass of wine at Y@GL afterparty, but sorted out that she was talking about the recently opened Bar Method® studio in Soho, (which opening was duly noted by SW readers way back in April). My sense was that this was a positive review: "It's that Lotte Berk thing," she said. "The studio is gorgeous. And so is the teacher."

DietGirl Falls in Love with Zumba DVD Girl

Zumba: The middlebrow dance workout you hate to love — but you go anyway because, well, it's dance, and it's sexy, and because you might end up in a Rockettes-style chorus line with ten complete strangers while listening to Ricky Martin. These are priceless moments in this cold world, even if the workout is not exactly Cross Fit grade. On the surface, Zumba the $60 "Total Body Transformation System DVD Set" would seem a poor idea. Rockettes-style chorus-lines-of-one in cramped urban apartments are to be avoided. As are toylike green handweights meant to be shaken like maracas. However, FYI DVD lovers, savvy Brit-blogger DietGirl has posted a lengthy and generally positive review of the Transformation Set, and she says the DVDs are "great," though with one caveat: The teachers are annoyingly hot....

Booaika: The New New Zumba in L.A.

Wherein Sasha P-R writes in from Los Angeles with the down low on a hot new class... -The Eds.

Walking into a dance studio in Los Angeles often feels like stumbling onto the set of Fame. Everyone’s got leg warmers, jazz shoes and sexy-sporty dance pants. Choreography blows by you at break neck pace, but your fellow classmates bust moves like they’re in a Janet Jackson video. Looking around, you realize that most of them are, and/or they are a member of the Pussycat Dolls. And all you wanted was a little cardio.

There is one increasingly hot dance hub in L.A., however, that's got your back if you're a mere mortal. Appropriately enough, it's called Your Neighborhood Studio. YNS is across the street from Smashbox Studios, in the old home of Debbie Allen’s dance academy, and it's keeping the faith with the motto,  “When in doubt—dance!" The studio offers the full gamut of classes, incuding ballet, jazz, hip hop, and modern, as well as burlesque, street tap, Bollywood, and "strip hop." BUT, arguably the most popular class on the schedule goes down at 9:30 A.M. on Saturday mornings....

Sexy Voices

Denise Austin Makes Over Your Body with Her Voice

My 2010 inaugural workout was Denise Austin's new Body Makeover Mix. Austin is exactly twice my age, still in Barbie doll condition, and has literally hundreds of workout videos to her name. In short, she would seem a solid year opener. First impression: When she finally hangs up her spandex, Denise Austin needs to consider a second career doing voice overs for steamy imported films, and/or paid phone services. Move over Lauren Bacall. What a voice.

Now then, Body Makeover Mix is compiled of three 45-minute workouts: Upper Body, Lower Body, and Abs. This isn't a hard workout, but it's well rounded, and perfect for those just starting, or anyone feeling a bit mellow, and/or lazy. Gory details after the jump, but here's one tip: My favorite Denise Austin exercise are her Renegade Rows. To do a Renegade Row, you assume  your normal soul crushing, plank position, and then lift up one hand at time to the corresponding shoulder, holding onto a weight. Normally these are done with kettlebells, but Denise does them with her itty-bitty three pounders, which is actually quite pleasant. Both she and the Internets promise that Renegade Rows will give you a "rock hard" tummy....

Workout DVD Fail: Dance Your Ass Off

A few months ago I had that dewy glow that only comes from coming from THE BEST AEROBICS CLASS EVER, which of course was Dance Your Ass Off at the 59th Street Crunch. I don't think I've ever liked anything as much as I liked that class, so I was pretty psyched to get my fingers on the new Dance Your Ass Off Workout DVD. Could it be that I was about to have that euphoric, sweat drenched feealing in the comfort of my own home?

No.  Definitely not. This DVD sucked, don't buy it.

In the Element: Yoga for Weight Loss

There are two subtitles that are interchangeable on just about any and every exercise video released.  One is "for beginners" the other is "for weight loss."  They don't really mean anything, but they sound good and aren't particularly intimidating.

By far the most consistently awesome exercise video series I've done is the Element series.  Everything Element touches turns my butt to gold. Yoga for Weight Loss is no exception.  I wish it weren't "for weight loss" and were instead "for a really positive yoga experience," but there's really not much I can do about it.

Carol J. Danced My Ass Off

Decided I was going to make my exercising life easy this week by hitting up a dance class. Specifically, Crunch's new Dance Your Ass Off (DYAO) which they designed cross-media style to compliment Oxygen Network’s new reality weight loss/dance show Dance Your Ass Off. It's a TV brand extension, for god's sake, how hard could it be? (Clearly, I hadn't paid close enough attention to certain workout posts around here.) Anyway, I figured I’d be on my way with a box step or two, a few grapevines, and no need for a shower. At the start, our instructor Carol asked if everyone had water. I looked around like “Uh, Carol, I don’t need no stinkin’ water.”

I’m an idiot. I needed water, and, after, a shower and a bed. This is not Jazzercise people. DYAO with Carol is non-stop moving for 60-minutes. I’d tell you how many calories I burned, but I was jumping around so much my heart rate monitor slipped out of place. I left drenched in sweat.

Multi Intenso Yoga

In the New York yoga scene, there are certain hub studios, places with street cred that attract regulars with strong practices. (Compared to these places, gym yogis and Bikram fans are strictly bridge-and-tunnel.) Among the hubs, in Tribeca, is the Kula Yoga Project, a crunchy, well-run studio, up a long flight of rickety stairs, which packs them in nearly ten times a day. The teaching is generally above average, with certain standouts.

Among the latter is David Andre Regelin, a tall, dark-haired yoga Adonis with an evangelical following. "I used to be a spinning junkie," raved one petitie Italian woman to me, "and I never thought yoga could give me the same kind of high. Then I discovered David."
