Kilt Me Dead (Equinox with Eden Kessler)

45m pilates class with Eden Kessler - the class used to be 1 hour, but instead of being easier, Eden made the class more challenging. If you aren't going to work as long, you are going to work harder. I love pilates. I love the grace, elegance, form and powerful control that you have with it. I find moments of it in rock climbing that beautiful breathe, move sweep dip drop exhale.

dear pilates, you are frustrating.

It's my third week in a row going to Ami's pilate class. It's great anc challenging and I know that my core is getting stronger, but man, it's aso really frustrating. Who knew that I have so many tiny intricate muscles that are weak and covered ever-so-slightly in a layer of cupcake fat.

TRX // PIlates

Squats, pushups, crunches - the TRX is my tool for them all. No machines except my body. (The TRX tagline is "make your body your machine" appropos, non?)

This evening - Pilates! Need to figure out how to count all the crunches, roll-ups, bicycles, and other forms of torture we do. Yikes!

Oliver Steele on Body Building and Being the Only Boy in Dance Class

Oliver and his wife Teri are the founders of STEELEDANCE, and both are on the faculty at Dance New Amsterdam. Last week we talked with Teri. Today, we get the other side of the story from Oliver.

I started dancing with gymnastics, actually, when I was ten or so. And I always wanted to do the girl's exercises on the floor, and I always wondered why the men couldn’t do gymnastics to music. I just enjoyed that dance aspect so much. When I was 16, a friend of mine was dancing in a jazz group and wanted me to join. I said, if there’s ever a boy who shows up to practice let me know, cause I’ll come too. I just don’t want to be the only one. One day she called and said, "We have another boy!" But, of course, I went, and the boy wasn’t there. But I was hooked, and I didn’t care.

Teri Steele on Dance Connections and Upward Spirals

Teri and her husband Oliver are the founders of STEELEDANCE, and both are on the faculty at Dance New Amsterdam. Today, we're talking with Teri. Tune in tomorrow for our conversation with Oliver. 

In '92, I was just starting to teach at Steps, and my husband had just finished his dance education in Germany, and he started taking my classes. He was here for three months, and at the end of three months we asked him to come back to do a show with us. People joked that we should marry each other so he could get his green card. We danced very much alike, so people aways put us together.

We started dating in March, and we got married in June. On the video, our faces are so scared! We went in knowing it was only a two year commitment, but that was 17 years ago. We danced in companies together, and we started teaching together. Having our dance connection has been huge. We identified ourselves through that connection. We can go into a class with a teacher who's never met either of us and stand on opposite ends of the room, and we'll still get put together.

I know that I should just rest and not workout so that my body can finish kicking the Horror Cold of 2010. But you know at the end of being sick when you are just restless and fidgety? That was me last Thursday, so I did another round of pilates.

This Damn Cold

Because I can't shake the Horror Cold of 2010, I've been doing some pretty wussy workouts. I did an hour of pilates that was so much more difficult than it should have been because I was a) tired and b) out of practice because I hadn't been working out. Ugh.

Saturday the crazy busy pilates class at Crunch, I like it but it's only 45 minutes long. i think I'm going to start doing some yoga at home on my own every day, just 15-20 minutes or so, just to stay flex. This week was pretty good, tuesday I went to hip hop, wednesday I ran, did elliptical and some weights, was pretty unfocused, thursday off, friday chisel which was awesome.

16 Hour Gym Love-Fest - Working out others and myself

6 am - One hour Spinergy (therabands included, and taking the seat off the bike to GO LOW!!!

2:30 pm - One hour hard core TRX, BOSU, Core session with another trainer and myself. Sharing the LOVE with each other so that we can be better for our clients that we LOVE!

4:45 - Pilates and Core - 45 minutes of hard core ab work - getting crazy with the small playground ball...OUCH

5 hours sleep, 6 am spin...NO PROBLEM!
