Tough Mudder Believes in a Macho America
Lest there was any doubt that Americans yearn to be wild, we give you Exhibit B: the Tough Mudder race series. If you are a guy, perhaps a friend has emailed this to you recently with the subject line "Our next challenge?" Brainchild of Will Dean, a Brit with a background in "counter terrorism," the races are self-consciously tough. They're not long, but they come with serious obstacles: Ridiculous hills, freezing rivers, and weird obstacles involving barbed wire. Estimated finishing time to cover the seven miles of the Bear Creek, PA race scheduled for May 2nd: Two hours and 30 minutes, i.e. a painful 21 minute mile. Sound ideal for frustrated ex-Special Services personnel? Maybe, but keep this in mind: Our man Dean also has a Harvard MBA, and he's launched 12 of these races of late, all located conveniently just outside of major American cities. Goodbye metrosexuals, hello Primals. Run barefoot! Run through mud! Hear you roar!

The Kid in Your Life Needs A Medal
On Saturday, April 24th, Asphalt Green, the giant not-for-profit fitness complex on the Upper East Side, is hosting the Big Swim. Any kid, ages 6 to 16 not currently on a swim team, is eligible to participate in the swim meet, and everyone gets a medal. Even better, the medal gets handed to them by triple Olympic gold medalist Rowdy Gaines or one of another crew of Olympians who'll be on hand. It's free to swim! RSVP by April 14 by calling 1.888.9.SWIMNY (1.888.979.4669). Attend the corresponding Big Swim luncheon, and all proceeds go to Asphalt Green's Waterproofing program, which provides free swimming and water safety lessons to NYC public school children.
If you can't wait till April to dip your toes in the water, Asphalt Green is also hosting an open house Tuesday, March 23rd, from 6:00-9:00 P.M., though the open house is only for the over 17 set. But it's similarly free, and you can Zumba or swim the night away. RSVP to Phil Donnelly (pdonnelly@asphaltgreen.org) if you plan to attend.
