Great classes

The gym is definitely small, but I've never had to wait for a machine. My biggest reason for joining this gym was the great variety of classes. they offer tons of yoga, strength classes, kickboxing, etc. and every instructor I've had so far has totally kicked ass.

Chill and Marvelously Affordable

Area Yoga is part of the Brooklyn Area kingdom, which spans from Brooklyn Heights to Carroll Gardens and includes a whole slew of shops: Area Kids, Area Play, Area Emporium and Spa, and Area Yoga and Baby. If you're new to the Brooklyn Area zone, we'll break it down for you: You're in the land of babies and yoga. Area Yoga has plenty to offer for the moms crowd, including prenatal classes and a fabulous "Yoga and Play" class, where kids 18 months to 4 years hang out in a supervised play space while parents practice yoga in the adjacent studio (cost: $150 for 6 weeks, one class per week). But it's not at all mom-exclusive.

Fitness Together - Even Cobble Hill Has Private Gyms

More on the private training tip: Fitness Together, on Court Street in Brookyn, is a small facility exclusively for one-on-one training -- so when you’re using the gym, you’re the only one using the gym. The privacy is a little addictive, as is, (in contradictory fashion), the personal attention lavished on you by the Fitness Together trainers. The gym specializes in body transformations, and they essentially oversee both your nutrition and your training. A gallery of amazing before and after shots, i.e. people who’ve lost 50 or 100 pounds, fills a big binder in the office as proof of their effectiveness.

Getting Personal

Lift Gym is one of the best-kept workout secrets in New York. It's a private gym, meaning personal trainers bring their clients there, but the place is not small: It's spread out over four floors on East 57th Street, and it has scores of machines which are clean, up-to-date, and always available. I've seen two trainers at Lift over the years and found them both extra top notch. Just a few sessions taught me alot, and pushed my fitness goals into a new realm.

The Monks are Taking Reservations

Tassajara Zen Mountain Center (Zenshinji) is a Buddhist monastery located in the Ventana Wilderness, just inland from the Central Coast of California. Every fall and winter, Tassajara shuts down to the public so the monks can study the Soto Zen tradition. In April, however, it re-opens, and the monks serve guests through October, raising money for the rest of the year. It's the perfect retreat: There is no Internet connectivity, or cell reception, or electricity. To light the center at night, the monks use kerosene lamps. The room design is Japanese Zen—some have only tatami mats to sleep on. There's a gorgeous Zendo for meditation, to which the monks are called several times a day by a ringing bell. The meals are vegetarian, and served family style, with food grown on the grounds. There are also "traditional" hot springs, which means men and women are separate until 8PM.

Chic-uinox...

...that's what some people like to call Equinox, in general, but the name particularly fits the club's West Hollywood branch, where hordes of body-obsessed A-list celebs work out daily. That they do is proof, among other things, that we all like to get out of the house. Clearly Jodie Foster can afford in-home pilates lessons, but she chooses to sweat with la raza. Human contact is important. Anyway, please forgive us if we go all Us Weekly for a moment, but among those our spies report seeing at the Chic-uinox are Dave Navarro, Chris Noth, J.C. Chasez, Bradley Cooper, Amanda Peet, Ryan Gosling, Drew Barrymore, Rashida Jones, Amanda Bynes, Jeanne Tripplehorn and Will Arnett. Note to our beautiful sponsor: Must poach that West Hollywood sales rep!

Goldilocks Finds Ashtanga Home in Brooklyn

My affair with yoga kicked off ten years ago in Newport Beach, under a pretzel-shaped Latvian named Juris. For years, I was a non-committal yogi, dipping in and out of class like a banana in a warm chocolate bain-marie. Then I moved to NYC and discovered Ashtanga at Williamsburg’s Greenhouse Holistic.

True Pilates

True Pilates is the Mecca or Bethlehem or Varanasi of Pilates. (Take your pick.) It's a modest studio on 57th Street off Fifth, but all the famous instructors across the country, from Brooke Siler to Mari Winsor, have made the pilgrimmage. They come to work with Romana Kryzanowska, the only living protege of Joseph Pilates.

Got 15 Minutes?

There are no group classes, steam rooms, juice bar, or tanning bed. Peter Cerqua wants you out of his gym in 15 minutes. Seriously. Welcome to the budding 90 Second Fitness empire: Cerqua's got locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Newtown, PA. (huh?) AND a new 90-Second Fitness book!

Clearly another fitness gimmick like the Tony Little's Ab Lounge, right? Check out this man's YouTube marketing. He's the Tom Carvel of fitness clubs.

Well, I did it. Last year. For like four weeks. And by the end I was 3 lbs. lighter than I've ever been since college.

Yoga in the Family

It's not some best friends' cult or anything, but walk into Mala Yoga, and you'll feel the sense of community. The instructors know everyone's name, your classmates will be chatting, you'll get some nice smiles and nods. The second floor studio is clean and light-filled. There's a dash of Ganesh, and some bright Indian-inspired curtains, but the overall feeling is more dance studio, less den of incense. If you're used to yoga classes at the gym, Mala won't feel like a 180 degree turn, but there's definitely a different vibe -- an intensity of focus, a dedication to yoga practice in the air. And it's catching.
