Superfood Hot Chocolate Time!

Yes, this one is spectacular in taste and in feel. You may be buzzed after this drink, ready to focus on your next book, or to take over the world. And your taste buds will be cheering for more. You will be warmed from the inside out and maybe feel a little fuzzy, in a good way. It's getting cold outside and it's time to bring warming elixirs into the mix. This is one of my faves!

Cacao beans were used by the Mayans as currency, and were considered a "Food of the Gods." All chocolate comes from this potent little bean. It's powerful stuff with a rich history as well as noteworthy health benefits and a couple of warnings. Cacao (or chocolate) has mood boosting effects, is considered an aphrodisiac, is high in magnesium which can have calming qualities, (yes ladies, there's a reason we crave chocolate when we're PMSing), and are full of anti-oxidants.

Cacao affects the brain by causing a release of certain neurotransmitters which can trigger emotions including euphoria! Now, for those of us who are very sensitive to energy inducing substances, you want to be mindful of how much you use to avoid a raging headache. Cacao is loaded with theobromine which affects our nervous system and has a similar affect to caffeine. So you may get a lift, and then a drop. Check out this great article on Cacao  to dig deeper into all this. And in the meantime, treat yourself to a real cup of hot chocolate loaded with life enhancing goodness! Yes please.

Get This:

1-2 cups of your favorite warm/hot tea: (chai, vanilla, something herbal and earthy, or you can even use warm/hot water too)

 small handful cacao nibs or a 4-5 beans (amount depends on how much of a punch you want. Cacao is energizing, similarly to caffeine)

  • 1 tbs Coconut butter/oil
  • 1 tbs raw wild honey, preferably local
  • 1-2 tspn raw Vanilla Powder (or extract)
  • 1 tbsn Maca Powder
  • dash of Cayenne (or to taste)
  • pinch Himalayan Pink Salt


Do This:

Blend together in a blender or Vitamix. With a Vitamix you will have a much smoother drink to enjoy! Otherwise use whatever blender you have. The amount of liquid you use depends on how thick you want it. Personally, I like my Hot Chocolate Elixir to be much thinner than a smoothie and a little thicker than a tea. 


For a creamier drink add any Nut or Seed Milk (ex: hemp, almond, brazil, cashew), or
organic grass-fed cream. Mmmm!
Since the cacao will give you a buzz, you may want to use caffeine free tea. Get the ingredients at www.ultimatesuperfoods.com or at your local health food store.
