Social Workout 2.0 Cleared for Take Off

Fasten your seatbelts, and hold on to your login credentials, we're about to flip the big switch here in Social Workout headquarters: Beginning tomorrow, this "blog" will live at a slightly new address. Actually, it already lives there. If you move your eyes to the address bar at the top of your browser window — easy now —  you'll notice that the site you are looking at is actually "blog.socialworkout.com."

Oh snap!

This might make you wonder: Where exactly is SocialWorkout.com at this very moment? Well, SocialWorkout.com, the "page," is currently in the garage getting re-tooled. Around high noon tomorrow, post switch flipping, that URL/page will reappear, but redesigned as a front door to BOTH this blog and to our new challenge site, a.k.a. Social Workout 2.0.

Huh? Could you go over that again?

Yes. As many of you know, we've been working away on a new and improved version of this site. Well, it's high time to push our baby out into the daylight. If you haven't already checked it out, the new site is less blog, and more personal activity tracker and communal challenge site....

Don't freak. We fully intend to keep blogging, and all of our frighteningly witty commentary (and yours) about American fitness culture will continue to live at blog.socialworkout.com. But we're absolutely delving much deeper into the activity tracking and social challenge features that we have all been exploring together on the current site.

Why the shift? Well, the old site, while great, has certain shortcomings. It was strong on blogging, but weak on the tracking and challenge stuff. Meanwhile, the worlds of fitness tracking (Fitbit! Nike Plus!) and social networking (Facebook!) are growing up fast, and we want to grow up with them. You might ask, is all this social tracking a good thing? Well, everything in moderation of course. But given the vast mainstream apparatus pushing junk food and major television events, the proliferation of an eco system of web-based support groups pushing healthy living may be the only thing standing between us and a grim Wall-E future.

That said, not every new calorie counting site or fancy pedometer app makes us smile. These things can get a little dry, or weight-obsessed, or just geeky. We want to build powerful software, but also not lose the warmth and humor and big pictureness of our present community. It's a high bar to reach, and we have a long way to go, but the only path available is forward....

Which makes this seems like a decent time to restate exactly where we hope to be going, and bringing you. We made our first Heartfelt Statement of Purpose way back in 2009, and the ruthless summary remains the same:

More people should dance!

Life is short, and a body is a terrible thing to waste. Social Workout, the software and the community, is here to help anyone drag their ass off the couch and break a sweat. To turn off the TV or computer, or cell phone, and try meditating. To dance naked in their bedroom, and eat more quinoa. And to successfullly navigate the profliferation of new fitness fads and technologies, as well as prime time Bravo television series. If you push us, we'll push you.

Onward!
