Feel Good Fixes

Have You Brushed Your Skin Today?

I've known about skin brushing for years. I used to do it religiously, but fell off the wagon. But now I'm back on it! It's become a part of my morning ritual. Not only does skin brushing feel awesome and invigorating, it also helps detoxify our largest organ — our skin! It helps to reduce cellulite and removes dead skin layers, cleanses the lymphatic system, tightens and tones the skin and muscles, helps digestion, stimulates circulation and internal organs, improves the function of the nervous system, and stimulates the hormone and oil-producing glands. Here's my recommendation for a great skin brushing routine:

Get this:

  • A good brush. Be sure to find a brush that is just right for YOUR skin, which may change over time once you get used to it. I have a medium textured natural fiber brush with a long handle.

Do this:

  • Dry brush your skin in circular motions from toe to head, with long sweeping strokes moving upward and toward the heart to help drain the lymph back to your heart.
  • Then take a hot shower, and finish with a cold blast of water.
  • Slather yourself with your favorite natural body butter/lotion.

Stick with it for at least a month straight, and you'll see some great results!

I use a dry brush before I get in the shower to receive the same results. It works!

In Ayurveda they say to do a dry brush/scrub down, then sesame seed oil massage and then shower. Haven't tried it myself yet though...

Ed note: I made a mistake in editing Aarona's post and got the order of brushing and showering wrong! She agrees with y'all: brush, then shower. Sorry about that.

Sometimes I also do it IN the shower! Wet skin brushing :) Still invitorating and helps to remove dead skin.

If you exercise in the morning and your skin is still sweaty from working out, can you still "dry" brush?
